With the January Window over two weeks old, Brighton And Hove Albion are yet to make any senior squad signings other than the solitary acquisition of Dutch forward Jurgen Locadia from PSV Eindhoven. Before this turns into a hindrance for them, below are the three positions they could do with strengthening in this month.
Centre Half:
The Seagulls are looking to add further cover in the central defence in case anything happens to the starting partnership of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy. Chris Hughton is also keen to add another centre-half due to him wanting to get Connor Goldson more game time and Ipswich Town want to take him on loan, but Hughton will not let him leave till he has signed someone to cover.
The latest centre-half to be linked with James Collins with the Sun reporting in their Football Confidential FC column that Hughton is ready to bid £2 million for West Ham defender James Collins. Collins has less than six months left on his deal at West Ham and at 34 has the experience that Hughton is looking for.
Central Midfielder:
The central midfield is another position that Brighton could well strengthen with the news last week that Steve Sidwell is out for the rest season with a back injury. This only leaves Beram Kayal, who is only recently back from injury plus starting midfield pair Dale Stephens and Davy Propper. Ideally, Hughton could do with another centre midfielder to give him more options in that area of the pitch. The most recent player in this position to be linked with Brighton is Andrew Surman from AFC Bournemouth. Although chief sports reporter at The Argus, Andy Naylor has said his sources have confirmed this is not true.
Striker:
This is the main goal of the recruitment team at Brighton this month, to try an add a pacey and prolific striker to the ranks to help Brighton score the goals needed to survive. This is something Albion missed out on in the summer with both Florin And one and Vincent Janssen turning down the chance to join. Moussa Dembele has been heavily linked with them this month. The latest rumour is Ze Luis is on the radar with Spartak Moscow looking for a replacement for him. This is one that may be true or may not be true but would be a good addition to the squad as he knows where the back of the net and has Champions League experience as well as international experience.
Whoever, The Seagulls sign if it is anything like the players Hughton and the recruitment team signed in the summer then they will be a great addition to the squad. With only two weeks left of the transfer window, it will certainly be interesting to see who The Seagulls can add to their squad in the next 14 days.
