Reports have emerged that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Georgian youngster, Giorgi Chakvetadze. The North London side are expected to make a £5m bid to K.A.A. Gent for the 18-year-old’s services.
Chakvetadze has made just one senior team appearance for Gent this season and is hungry for regular minutes on the pitch. The Georgian U21 international came into the limelight while playing for Dinamo Tbilisi in the 2016-17 season. Chakvetadze scored 5 goals while grabbing 11 assists in 29 appearances for the Georgian club and sprung himself up on the list of hot European talents.
Blessed with top quality technical skills and quick feet from the midfield areas, the Tbilisi-born midfielder has the ability to break down opposition defences. His creative spark is a great talent to nurture in the fast-paced English game especially in a top pedigree side like Tottenham.
Mauricio Pochettino is notorious for fielding young players and giving them the confidence to shine at the elite level. The current Spurs side is the youngest team in the Premier League with an average age of 24 years and 7 months. This is a promising sign for young ambitious talents all over Europe especially after watching the emergence of players like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Danny Rose over the last few years.
Chakvetadze might not break into the first team right on his arrival with players like Moussa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks and Christian Eriksen ahead of him, but can prove himself from the substitute appearances.
The first week of the short transfer window has already passed us by and Tottenham are yet to make a signing. The early months of September and October exposed the squad’s lack of depth in the squad when the club had to balance the Premier League along with Champions League football. Granted that they were highly impressive in the European stage finishing above Real Madrid in the group and cruising through to the round of 16, but the second half of the season is still left and silverware of some sorts is necessary.
They are 3 points behind Liverpool in the points table and are gunning for a top 4 finish ahead of rivals Arsenal. And for that, the Wembley side cannot rely completely on Eriksen, Alli and Kane. A well-proven winger is one of their top priorities along with a striker to bolster their attacking lineup. Chakvetadze’s signing along with a couple more might finally allow Pochettino to match strides with the two Manchester sides.
