Tottenham Hotspur has been dealt a big blow in their pursuit of Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon. According to recent reports, the Fulham manager Slaviša Jokanović has ruled out a move for their star left-back in this January transfer window even with the arrival of Matt Targett, who operates in the same position, from Southampton earlier in this transfer period.
It has been reported that by securing the services of the 22-year-old youngster, the Cottagers could be slowly thinking about the possibility of life without their teenage wonderkid but the Premier League pair of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will be disheartened to find out that Targett has not been brought as a replacement for Sessegnon but rather to play alongside him.
The 17-year-old has found the back of the net 11 times and provided four assists in 29 matches in the English Championship this term and is widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in European football. The 17-year-old is highly versatile and can operate anywhere on the left side of the pitch. The Fulham boss Slaviša Jokanović reckons that the arrival of Targett at Craven Cottage might further unlock his true potential going forward. It looks like Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs will have to wait for their chance of recruiting the Fulham starlet as he looks set to stay with the Cottagers this month.
Let’s take a look at three potential alternatives for Spurs to consider before the transfer window comes to a close at the end of this month.
Stephen Hendrie
The 23-year-old Scottish full-back has been a rock at the back for Southend United. He has featured in 15 matches for the League One club and is one of the most promising full-backs coming out of the third tier of English football. Spurs could do well to recruit him and develop him into a future Premier League star.
Arthur Masuaku
Tottenham Hotspur can also look to recruit a full-back with more Premier League experience as in the case of this West Ham United left-back. The 24-year-old has been in terrific form for the Hammers this term and has made 25 appearances for the east London club in all competitions, scoring once and providing two assists. His league form this season justifies that he could turn out to be a great asset for the north Londoners if they decided to opt for his services in the near future.
Joe Bryan
The Bristol City left-back has put in some excellent displays this season which included a memorable man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United in his side’s triumph over the Red Devils in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup. The 24-year-old has played in 32 matches for Bristol City this term, scoring four goals and creating two assists across all competitions. He will be a perfect fit for Mauricio Pochettino’s playing style at Spurs.
