Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the services of Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Jannik Vestergaard. Some sources are claiming that Spurs are set to reignite their interest on the Bundesliga defender after already been linked with the centre-back back in the summer of 2016. According to Tuttomercatoweb.com, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are interested to make an offer for Vestergaard next summer with their rivals Arsenal also keeping tabs on the player and are lining him up as a potential replacement for Per Mertesacker at the end of the season.
Inter Milan are also reportedly monitoring his situation at Borussia Monchengladbach as well and are considering whether to make a loan move in the winter transfer window with an option to sign him permanently next summer.
The centre-back is highly regarded in the Bundesliga and at 25, he still has his peak years in front of him. Spurs have tried to sign him in the past when he was at Werder Bremen as claimed by SportBild back in May 2016. He is the sort of player who can definitely improve the North London club’s backline in the coming seasons as they try to establish themselves as Champions League regulars.
Vestergaard is under contract with Borussia Monchengladbach until June 2021 so his club holds all the cards for a potential transfer to take place in the near future. The Danish international has featured in 17 league matches for his club and has scored 3 goals so far which has helped his team climb to 6th place in the Bundesliga standings. They are in with a real shout to secure a Champions League spot going into the second half of the season and it’s partly to do with his defensive contributions.
His knack for scoring goals could be another asset for Tottenham if they manage to land the player. The former Hoffenheim defender has also earned 15 international caps for the Denmark national team having represented his country at every youth level from Under 18 onwards.
Tottenham Hotspur currently finds themselves in fifth place in the Premier League table and has conceded only 20 goals in 22 league matches. The central defensive duo of Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen has done well so far but the long-term injury of Toby Alderweireld has cast doubt over his future at the club with the star Belgian defender wanting a pay rise which Spurs are reluctant to hand out. The possible departure of Alderweireld at the end of the season has paved the way for a potential move for Vestergaard to Spurs next summer.
