Swansea City are plotting a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Nicolas Gaitan this month. According to recent reports in the English press, the Swans were set to be rivalled by Inter Milan in pursuit of the Argentine ace. However, some sources have claimed that the Italian club has recently dropped out of the race leaving Swansea clear in their quest to land the 29-year-old’s signature before the end of the winter transfer window. Gaitan has fallen out of favour at the La Liga club and is looking to switch clubs in January.
The Swans are eager to sign the former Benfica winger but feared the worst when Inter Milan entered the race for his signature. They were afraid that the Italian club would outbid them for Gaitan but can now breathe a sigh of relief as the San Siro based outfit have told Carlos Carvalhal’s side that they won’t rival them in pursuit of the Argentine international. The Serie A giants are potentially looking for other attacking reinforcements with Gaitan not being one of them. However, a potential move for Javier Pastore might be lined up from Paris Saint-Germain in the near future.
Only time will tell whether the 20th placed Premier League club will be successful in bringing Gaitan to ply his trade in Wales.
Swansea City are currently rock bottom of the Premier League table and are in real danger of getting relegated at the end of the season. However, there is still hope for the Welsh club following the arrival of Carlos Carvalhal who has turned their fortunes for the better. They beat Watford away at Vicarage Road and drew with Newcastle United at Tyneside in their last few league outings which have put them in a position to get themselves out of the relegation zone. The Swans are just four points away from safety with 15 games to go in the Premier League season. The potential addition of Gaitan could go a long way in helping them in their quest to avoid the drop and secure Premier League football for next season.
The 29-year-old is currently out with a muscle injury and has struggled during his time in Spain. He has just made 12 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season and is yet to find the back of the net so far in this campaign. A change of scenery could reignite his career with the Swans desperate to acquire his services.
It remains to be seen whether Swansea City could convince Atletico Madrid to part ways with their prized asset before the end of this transfer window.
