Reports have emerged that Sunderland are closing in on a short loan move for out of favour Wolves winger, Ben Marshall. The 26-year-old has registered just 304 minutes of game time this season and are growing more frustrated under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Once a player in the youth ranks of Manchester United, Marshall has faced quite a few obstacles in his early days to generate a successful professional career. Even after signing a three-year contract with Stoke City, he never got to appear for the Potters senior side and spent his tenure with the club away on loan to lower-division sides.
He got his major breakthrough in Leicester City with 9 goals in 61 appearances and went on to be one of the key figures in the Blackburn Rovers squad from 2013 to 2017. He was held to high praise by Paul Lambert who successfully got the Salford-born winger to join him at the Wanderers.
Wolves are headed towards a completely different directions than they were a couple of seasons ago. Their dominance in the second division of English football has been fuelled by a good investment strategy in obtaining top quality young talents, and this has put a huge question mark on Marshall’s future at the club.
At 26-year-old, players usually enjoy the peak of their footballing careers and warming the benches at the Molineux Stadium is not in his career ambitions. He can find a place in a side who are struggling at the other end of the Championship and can help them escape relegation.
Chris Coleman has so far failed to sign an out-and-out winger and all his transfer targets have fused out with just over a week left in the January transfer window. Not that his worries were enough, Lewis Grabban, the club’s highest goalscorer ended his loan spell with the side and opted to return to his parent club, Bournemouth.
Hit with a plethora of blows, the Black Cats are facing another tumultuous season with the feeling of the entire world’s forces against them. A second relegation in consecutive seasons is a tough pill to swallow for all the fans at the Stadium of Light. The atmosphere at the stands have turned toxic and something needs to be done in order to make the miraculous comeback.
The former Wales boss has instilled a bit of defensive structure into the side and is hoping for a proven attacking threat to lead the side offensively. Marshall is the right man to do just that and his signing is one bright glow that the fans have been hoping for.
