Homecoming stories are always telling tales of grasping drama. In the world of football, where players travel the world playing for various teams, they make new friends, form new attachments and most importantly they leave an imprint when they exit their existing club chapter for a new spell at a different club.
It is not always easy for players to move on and sometimes they seek to find their way back to their old stomping grounds. The return of these cult heroes are followed with great interest and the measure of their success is taken against their previous spell at the club.
Of the recent stories of players returning, the most popular ones of Wayne Rooney returning to his boyhood club Everton, David Luiz seeking redemption at Chelsea, Pogba wanting to prove his mettle at Old Trafford and Torres linking up with his first true love, Atletico Madrid.
The latest chapter to be added to this tale of the returning heroes is the story of Sergio Aguero being linked with a move back to Atletico Madrid.
A source said: “Atletico have contacted Sergio’s representatives to see if there is any chance of getting him back. Pep doesn’t want him to go but has been looking at bringing in Antoine Griezmann, so there could be something there. Pep is a massive fan of him and his clause at the end of the season is a bargain for a player of his quality. City has made discreet enquiries over Griezmann in the past, so there is the interest from both sides.”
As is the case with every great team, there is always a focal point of attack; a striker who carries the team on his shoulders by scoring those all important goals. Not to diminish the significance of the players in other positions, but only by scoring goals can you win matches and trophies, such is the law of football and that is what makes the game of a striker all the more important. Atletico has had a history of producing world-class strikers over the past decade or so. Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa and now Antoine Griezmann.
In Atletico’s current set-up, their manager Diego Simeone has produced a hard-hitting and battling side who refuse to concede goals. With Griezmann rumoured to be on the verge of an exit from the club, Atletico will need a special player to replace their Frenchman. Having Aguero would add that much-needed deftness and magic at the top which is required to complete the balance of the team and score the important goals for Atletico.
