Norwich City has announced the signing of 25-year-old German footballer Moritz Leitner. The FC Augsburg man has been brought in on loan until the end of the season.
“I’m really happy to be here,” Leitner, 25, told canaries.co.uk. “I just want to help this team, and I’m glad to be coming to a big team. I just want to play football and help the team on the pitch. I’ve heard it’s an amazing stadium with amazing fans. I can’t wait to start; I want to start playing now! Maybe I’ll have to wait a little bit, but I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere in the stadium and on the pitch and for sure I want to celebrate with the team, the club and the fans.”
The midfielder will be expected to feature in the first team and help Norwich climb up the ladder from the midtable position and challenge for an unlikely playoff place.
Leitner has previously worked under City boss Daniel Farke in the Under-23s at Borussia Dortmund and will be only too happy to work with him again.
“I know him, he knows me,” Leitner said. “I’m just happy because I know what he can do. He knows how I play football and how I can help this club. I hope me and the whole team can play really good football for Daniel. The football he likes to play really suits me.”
This will be the first taste of English football for the 25-year-old and he is raring to go.
“England is an amazing football country,” he said. “Every player wants to play in England and now I have a chance. For every player, it’s amazing to play football here, and I just want to start as soon as I can. I want to play football. I love playing, and I just want to play with my new teammates and for my new club and I hope I can get out there soon. I can’t wait to start.”
Daniel Farke, who coached Leitner at Dortmund in the Under-23s, is also happy to have Leitner in the side.
“He’s a player of unbelievable potential,” said Farke. “He has 100 appearances in the Bundesliga, several appearances in the Champions League, has won the German title, has won the German Cup, and was on the bench in the Champions League final. He is still a young player with potential, but he also has a lot of experience. He’s had a difficult couple of years, but we feel we can develop him and bring him back to his full potential.”
Only time will tell whether Farke can make Leitner click in England but as of now Norwich fans should be excited.
