Newcastle United are interested in securing the services of Borussia Dortmund attacker Andre Schurrle on a loan deal in this January transfer window. According to some sources in the English press, the Magpies are preparing to move in for the ex Chelsea winger with manager Rafael Benitez eager to bolster his attacking options this month. The Bundesliga forward has fallen down the pecking order at Dortmund in this campaign and has found first-team opportunities limited under manager Peter Stöger so far.
It is being reported that he could be available on a loan deal in January with the German side eager to cut down on their wage bill which might lead to them to offload the striker who is earning a reported £150,000-a-week in wages.
It is believed that the Premier League pair of Newcastle United and Stoke City are two possible destinations for the 27-year-old striker during this transfer window. The Magpies have yet to sign any player so far in this ongoing winter transfer period but could potentially pull off a major coup if they are successful in bringing Schurrle to Tyneside.
Newcastle United are currently in 15th place in the Premier League table with a total tally of 23 points in 24 league matches. They are sitting just a point above the drop zone and are in real danger of getting relegated at the end of the current campaign. The Toon Army was hoping that a potential takeover would happen sooner rather than later but recent reports suggest that the deal is off with Benitez confirming that he was aware that the takeover was off weeks ago.
This recent development would come as a huge blow for the Tyneside club as they could have made life easy with an injection of cash into the club to help them recruit some quality during the January transfer window. However, the Magpies will now have to settle for a short-term solution and a possible loan deal for Schurrle this month might go a long way in saving the club from suffering the agony of relegation this season.
The former Premier League winner has the calibre to turn Newcastle’s fortunes for the better going into the second half of the season. Schurrle signed for Borussia Dortmund from Vfl Wolfsburg for a fee in the region of £25m in the summer of 2016. The German World Cup winner has only featured in 10 matches for the Bundesliga club across all competitions. Although, he is yet to find the back of the net so far but has two assists to his name in the Bundesliga this season.
Only time will tell whether the Tyneside club are successful in their efforts to lure him to playing football at St. James Park.
