Bordeaux are plotting a move for Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic. According to the latest reports in the French press, the Ligue 1 club has begun negotiations with the Magpies over a possible deal for the outcast striker. The 23-year-old forward is yet to start a Premier League match this season with the likes of Dwight Gayle, Joselu, and Ayoze Perez all being preferred ahead of him under manager Rafael Benitez.
It is still unclear whether the Serbian international will depart St. James’ Park this month after struggling for game time in this campaign. Some sources have claimed that Bordeaux are hoping to secure his services before the transfer window closes later this month and has already enquired about a potential switch for the Magpies asset.
Bordeaux are currently in a fight to save themselves from a potential relegation from Ligue 1 after picking up only 20 points in 19 league matches. They are in dire need of reinforcements in January to help them avoid relegation at the end of the season. However, they are aware that a move for the Newcastle forward Mitrovic might be out of their price range but are still hopeful of their chances of securing the player’s signature.
The 23-year-old Serbian forward has made 7 appearances for the Tyneside club in all competitions this season and has scored 2 goals so far. He has struggled to settle into the Premier League but a potential switch to Ligue 1 might suit his playing style. Bordeaux has been unable to find the back of the net consistently this term scoring only 22 goals in 19 league games and the addition of Mitrovic can help their cause with the forward a constant threat from set-pieces. At 23, some might consider that he still has his peak years ahead of him which the Ligue 1 club can benefit from.
Mitrovic has shown that he can be a prolific goal-scorer during his time with Anderlecht where he scored 44 goals and made 11 assists in 90 appearances for the Belgian club and at Partizan Belgrade where he found the back of the net 17 times and provided 10 assists in 42 matches. It remains to be seen whether he can regain his old form once again but the Premier League looks like it has got the better of the striker with Mitrovic failing to secure regular football so far.
The Magpies can afford to let him go as they could use the money generated from his potential sale to add some quality in other areas of the squad. It is a move that will benefit all parties going into the second half of the season. Only time will tell whether Bordeaux are successful in their attempts to lure the big Newcastle United forward to Ligue 1 football.
