Middlesbrough are lining up an offer for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Jordan Cousins. According to recent reports in the English media, the Boro are keen on signing Cousins on a cut-price deal before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Some sources in the English press have suggested that the ex Charlton Athletic player could be available for as little as £1m during this transfer period as QPR looks to sell him for financial concerns.
Any potential move would indicate a brilliant piece of business for his potential suitors with Middlesbrough looking like a likely destination. However, it would come as a surprise as Tony Pulis ruled out making any further permanent additions in this January transfer window. In an interview earlier this week, the Boro boss was quoted to have said, “We’ll see what happens over the next three or four days. If we can add one or two, they’ll be loans. We won’t be spending any money. If people leave, then they leave. We’ll make a decision based on how strong we are if those players leave the football club.
“There’s money there. The chairman has told me there’s money there if I want to spend it. I’ve been in the job for three or four weeks now, but you need three or four months at a football club to actually get to grips with it.
“I don’t want to throw caution to the wind. I want to be pretty sensible if I can with what we try to do, both on and off the pitch. Then at the end of the season, I can go and have a good chat with Steve.”
Middlesbrough are currently occupying 8th place in the Skybet Championship standings with a tally of 44 points in 28 matches. They are still in contention to secure a playoff spot at the end of the season and are just two points behind sixth-placed Sheffield United who occupy the final playoff spot. Tony Pulis could make use of a few more quality additions in this ongoing winter transfer period and a potential move for Cousins on a cut-price deal will definitely be a deal worth making!
The 28-year-old midfielder has made eight appearances for QPR this season but is yet to register a goal in this campaign so far. He has also represented England in their youth ranks playing for the Under 16s, Under 17s, Under 18s and Under 21s during his career.
The recruitment of Cousins will undoubtedly bolster his midfield options ahead of a busy few months in the Championship. The Boro are currently preparing for an FA Cup fourth-round clash versus Brighton and Hove Albion at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday. It remains to be seen if Tony Pulis ends up tabling a bid for the QPR midfielder’s signature before the end of this month.
