David de Gea’s transfer move to Real Madrid takes another twist now that the Manchester United shot-stopper has refused to comment on talks of an extension. The Spaniard was quoted, “I don’t think it’s the time to start talking about the future, it’s not the time to be talking contracts. It’s all about getting your head down, focusing, working hard, competing in training, keeping fit and picking up points.”
David De Gea has been United’s saviour in goal for the last four seasons and he is arguably the best stoppers in the game right now alongside Manuel Neuer. Should De Gea agree to sign the new contract, United fans will have a lot to celebrate about.
But with his contract set to end by the end of next season, is his silence a sign of an uncertain future at Old Trafford? His ambitions lie in winning trophies and even though Manchester United have resurrected their status in top-flight football in recent times, a move to Real Madrid will look like an opportunity you cannot miss out on.
Ever since Iker Casillas left the club back in 2014 fans at Santiago Bernabeu have seen a number of familiar faces get shifted around in the position over the years, but nobody could cement a permanent spot. The case is similar to current keepers, Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla. Navas is the first choice under Zidane and is definitely a prolific talent, but the 31-year-old suffers from bouts of inconsistency.
Florentino Perez’s search for the perfect shot-stopper has not gone seamlessly either over the past year. Thibaut Courtois’ recent statements revealed that the Belgian is eager to stay with Chelsea and is very close to signing a new deal with the club. A move for Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga also hit a rough patch when the 23-year-old failed the medical test at Los Blancos and is expected to be out of action until March.
This is definitely a concern for the Galactico fans who are currently dealing with the team’s struggle in the La Liga. A 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo last week has opened up a 16 point gap between the club and rivals Barcelona who are the current league leaders. Conceding the title to their direct rivals will not sit with the Madrid board but they can still salvage the season with another Champions League trophy.
Maybe it is time to finally make the move for de Gea and splash in a significant fee to bolster the team’s mentality ahead of next season.
