Reports have emerged that Manchester United are interested in signing Celtic defender, Kieran Tierney this January.
The Hoops left-back recently signed a contract that is six years long and Tierney who has played for the club since the age of 17 after coming through the youth ranks wants a long and illustrious career at Celtic. Tierney has been extremely impressive for Celtic and at the age of 20, has a long career ahead of him.
A Celtic youth academy product currently playing for the senior team, he made his debut two years back in 2015 as a teenager and since has occupied the left-back position in the club. His love for Celtic is visible and having played for close to two years at the club, Tierney is closing in on 100 appearances for the club, a record very few people hold at such a young age.
Tierney was singled out for praise by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers after the 2-1 midweek defeat to Bayern Munich. “Kieran Tierney was up against Arjen Robben and he was outstanding again,” Rodgers said. “I had Danny Rose as a young player at Watford and I worked with Ryan Bertrand at Chelsea, and Kieran is right up there with those boys.
“He is still very young and those boys are in their later twenties. He still has bits of improvements to make but his quality, his will, his determination and his focus for a young player is outstanding and he loves playing for Celtic.
“And nights like that, you can see why he wanted to sign here. He is a real special talent, but a boy who is focused in improvement.”
It is no secret that Manchester United are very vulnerable in the left back position, with Jose Mourinho eagerly looking for proven talents to take up the spot immediately.
Currently, Ashley Young has been implemented to the left with Daley Blind and Luke Shaw as possible options behind him. Although the 32-year-old has impressed under his new role for the club, he still does not possess the key components of an elite left-back – a strong left foot and defensive ability.
Shaw has been linked to a possible move out of the club after failing to make an impact for the Red Devils ever since his £27 million move from Southampton. Daley Blind, on the other hand, has not yet adjusted to the pace of the English game mostly being placed in the centre back position behind the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
Matteo Darmian has also failed to feature for the side under Jose Mourinho and might be offloaded in the future. Tierney can be the perfect answer to all of Mourinho’s defensive problems at least from the next season if not immediately.
