Manchester United may slowly be losing their grip on the 2nd place in the points table. The manager will be desperate for his side to find some consistency for the rest of the season but he might have to make a few changes to the squad, to make sure that his side can compete with the best in Europe.
While this has seen the Red Devils linked with some exciting names, they are also looking to offload players who do not belong in the first team and one player Jose Mourinho is ready to sell is Italian full-back Matteo Darmian.
A product of the AC Milan academy, Darmian made a name for himself in his four years at Torino, where he managed 133 Serie A appearances before moving to Manchester United in 2015. He was expected to the be the first choice full-back for the club for years to come but he failed to show enough promise and has fallen down the pecking order.
He has failed to impress the new manager Jose Mourinho, who has preferred the likes of Luke Shaw and Ashley Young at left back and Antonio Valencia at right back. This has seen Darmian make just seven starts in all competitions this season, only two of which have come in the domestic league.
At 28, he is supposed to be in the best shape of his career and will want to play as many games as possible and reports today suggest that Mourinho will not block his exit this month.
The Independent have today claimed that Italian giants AC Milan are looking to bring him back to Italy, along with La Liga outfit Valencia, who are close to landing him. The story also claims that Manchester United might want to use the defender as a part of the deal to land Alex Sandro from Juventus, who has been a long-term transfer target for the Portuguese manager at Old Trafford.
After 114 Serie A appearances and 50 PL appearances, the versatile full-back, who can play on either flank and also play as a CB, is an experienced campaigner, who will only add options to Mourinho’s lineups. He may not be the in the first team plans but is definitely a player who can help them for the rest of the season and there is no reason for Mourinho to let him leave anytime soon.
His contract with the club does not expire till the end of the next season and Mourinho is better equipped with Darmian to help him out in the later stages of the game and keeping him at the club is better than disrupting the defensive unit at Old Trafford, mid-way through the season.
