Latest reports in England are claiming that Manchester United are set to move for Paulo Dybala with a player plus cash deal. The Red Devils are set to offer Matteo Darmian to sweeten the deal for Juventus alongside a considerable amount of cash.
The Italian right-back was brought in from Torino by Louis Van Gaal in the 2015-16 season for a fee of £12.7m. Although he was a promising signing, Darmian’s career at United never took off as he struggled to nail down a regular first-team spot.
He continued to struggle under Jose Mourinho as his erratic nature of defending prompted the Portuguese boss to move him down the pecking order. His relevance in the team was all but lost. It was then that Mourinho played his card and shifted Darmian to the left back.
The move turned out to be extremely effective as the Italian found a new found life at the club and his last six months of the previous season showed an upward spiral to his career graph at United. He became a key figure for United’s knockout stage in the Europa League.
This season, however, he has been replaced by Ashley Young and then Luke Shaw at left back and it seems that Darmian is tired of his frustrating time at the club. United also seems to have deemed the defender as surplus to requirements and wants to use him as a token to land Dybala.
Paulo Dybala has thrown his future into the pit of uncertainty by refusing to commit his long-term stay at Juventus. The left-footed Argentine has been compared to Messi on several occasions for their similar stature and nature of football. Dybala has been in imperious form for Juventus this season and is finally living up to his potential of becoming a world-class player.
The news breaking out about Dybala’s future will certainly alert the top clubs across Europe. However, given the inflated state of the current market, not many of them will be able to afford the Argentine. Neymar recently broke the 200 million mark for a footballer’s transfer price and Dybala would be expected to go somewhere near about that region at least if he chooses to leave Juventus.
Not to belittle the financial or the global power of any club, but even amongst the top dogs of European football, only a handful will be able to pull off such a high-profile transfer. One such club would have to be Manchester United.
Dybala will complete the team which consists of players like Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba and it would be dream come true for United fans to see a team of such raw pace, guile and power, rain in goals at Old Trafford. All this, of course, will only happen given a move is made and Dybala chooses Manchester United over other suitors.
