Manchester United have been a busy club this January. They have landed a genuine superstar in Alexis Sanchez already this month but Jose Mourinho is still in search of players who can improve his squad. While keeping the emphasis on the first team, the manager is also keen to improve the academy and youth at the club and this has seen the Red Devils sign some exciting youngsters in recent weeks.
One name that they have added to their academy is 17-year old Matej Kovar.
A statement on the club website read: An exciting prospect, Kovar has signed a professional contract with the club and will soon join the ranks of the Academy, specifically with Kieran McKenna’s impressive Under-18s team.
This is the second signing for United this month and it is understood that Kovar has joined the club subject to international clearances.
At just 17, he has already made a couple of appearances for the Czech Republic national side and is considered as one of the most exciting prospects in his country. He may take a lot of time to get near the first team at Old Trafford but this represents the long-term plans Jose Mourinho has at Manchester United.
He only recently signed a new contract till 2020 and looks fully committed to take the club back to its glory days in years to come.
Angel Gomes, local lad Aidan Barlow, impressive French youngster Aliou Traoré and Spanish youth international Arnau Puigmal, are all youth products that have signed new deals at the club in recent weeks.
17-year old Kovar will have to impress in McKenna’s academy and has quite a few hurdles to get through to the first team. David de Gea, who could yet sign a new deal at Old Trafford, remains the first choice for Mourinho while Sergio Romero, who is struggling to get into the first team, could quit the club come the end of the season.
Joel Castro-Pereira, who made it to the bench in the senior side on eight occasions, recently got 12 minutes of EFL Cup action. Castro-Pereira remains the only other quality option at the club and Kovar will add to the list.
He is known for his ability with the ball at his feet, which has become a pre-requisite for shot-stoppers of the new age and the Czech star, with his confidence, will surely be a star at Old Trafford in years to come.
