Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are reportedly ready to bid for Brazilian winger Lucas Moura. Lucas joined PSG after a lot of hype in the summer of 2012 with Manchester United and Inter Milan also chasing his signature. Paris ended up luring the player after paying €45 m, an amount Sir Alex Ferguson condemned at that time, for his services. He has gone on to make 229 appearances for the club and has scored 46 goals and created 50 more in those matches.
The big money signing was expected to become one of the best midfielders in the world but the little winger with an excellent dribbling skill is yet to live up to his potential.
PSG spend cover to £200 million in transfers this summer and are likely to list a host of big names on their selling list to balance the books. The arrival of Neymar, Mbappe, Draxler and Di Maria over the last two seasons has seen Lucas lose his first-team chances. With the Brazilian falling down the pecking order, a move for the winger could be possible in the January window. This might prompt Lucas to move to one of the two north London clubs where he is likely to get a lot more game time.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is a believer in high-tempo football with a team that has a great tenacity to attack in waves. He also loves to give chances to young players to thrive on the big stage. He helps prepare them for the grand occasions by managing them with great care so as to remove the fear of the occasion from them.
The development of the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and most recently Davinson Sanchez stands as a testimony to the work Pochettino has done and can do with young players who have the potential. Should such an opportunity arrive for Lucas; to work with a manager of Pochettino’s calibre and in a team of Tottenham’s quality, it is difficult to see him turning it down in favour of a stay at a club where he is no longer a first-team player.
As for his other option, joining Arsenal will also open up more game time for the winger. Alexis Sanchez’s departure means the club is falling on short on wingers and Lucas’ arrival will see the Brazilian form an attack with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
A move to a different team might just be what Lucas needs to restart his stagnated career but the final decision for him would be tough as both Tottenham and Arsenal are now vying for a Champions League spot with the battle set to continue till the end of the season.
