Liverpool are plotting a move for Charlton Athletic starlet Ezri Konsa. According to recent reports in the English media, the Reds are among a whole host of Premier League clubs looking to secure the youngster’s signature. However, it is believed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently leading the race with their local rivals Everton also monitoring the progress of the 20-year-old. The Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet is reportedly looking to cash in on their prized asset and may look to ship him out of south-east London in the near future.
Some sources have already claimed that the Merseyside club are leading the chase with another former Charlton Athletic player already in their ranks in the form of Joe Gomez. Addicks manager Karl Robinson has previously stated his desire to keep hold of his players at the club but it is clear that he is powerless in this situation with the club overruling him in such matters as evidenced by Ricky Holmes’s departure to Sheffield United. The Charlton manager has revealed that he received an email from the club addressing the situation.
Everton were the favourites to land Konsa’s signature but with the Reds also looking to sign him, it is expected that the highly rated centre-back will join the red half of Merseyside with the Charlton manager, a big fan of the club having worked there and being brought up in Liverpool.
Liverpool are currently in 4th place in the Premier League standings, just three points behind third-placed Chelsea and a massive 18 points behind league leaders Manchester City. The Merseyside club needs to build for the future to try and bridge the gap between themselves and the Premier League’s big spenders. The addition of Konsa will undoubtedly bolster their defensive options in the coming years but he would not be an immediate fix to the Reds’ defensive problems right now.
The 20-year-old centre-back has already featured in 30 matches for Charlton Athletic this season helping his club climb to sixth place in the League One table. He has also represented the England Under-20 side in 4 matches at the international stage. Jurgen Klopp has made a habit of giving his promising youngsters a chance in the Liverpool first-team as evidenced by the recent emergence of Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson. Hence, the Merseysiders will be an ideal choice for Konsa to showcase his talents and develop under Klopp in order to fulfil his immense potential at Anfield.
It remains to be seen whether the Reds are successful in their attempts to acquire Konsa’s services in the near future.
