Liverpool are looking to make a late attempt to secure the services of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez. It is being reported that the Reds are ready to rival Manchester United and Manchester City in pursuit of the Chilean captain this month. Jurgen Klopp’s side has recently sold Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona for a deal worth in the region of £142m and could easily meet the Gunners’ reported asking fee of £35m for their prized asset.
The owners of the Merseyside club, Fenway Sports Group know that they need to spend big in order to end their 28-year wait for a Premier League title and the acquisition of Sanchez could turn them into potential title challengers next season. The Reds has already splashed the cash for Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk earlier in this transfer window and might be ready to do the same again for another world-class talent.
The 28-year-old Chilean international joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 from Barcelona and has gone on to have a productive career at the Emirates Stadium. He has scored 80 goals and made 46 assists in 166 appearances during his time in North London and so, it is no wonder that some of the Premier League heavyweights are ready to battle it out for his signature.
Liverpool are currently in 3rd place in the Premier League standings, level on points with Manchester United and Chelsea but a massive 15 points behind league leaders Manchester City. However, they beat Pep Guardiola’s men and broke their unbeaten record by securing a 4-1 home victory at Anfield on Sunday night. The potential of adding someone of the calibre of Sanchez could help the Reds bridge the gap to City next season but it won’t be easy with the Red Devils and the Citizens of Manchester both prepared to secure the Chilean’s signature.
The 28-year-old has suffered a slight dip in form this season and has scored 8 goals and made 4 assists in 22 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions. He will definitely improve on that record going into the future as he will be more motivated after signing a long-term contract for any of those clubs. The Chilean will also miss out on the 2018 World Cup as his nation has not qualified for the competition which means that he will be fresh for the new season.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can fend off still competition from the Manchester clubs and are successful in their efforts to lure the 28-year-old superstar into joining them at Merseyside.
