Leicester City have joined in the race to sign Jonny Evans from West Brom by the end of January. Priced at over £25m the 30-year-old is on the wishlist of multiple Premier League sides and the Foxes will have to beat monumental odds to land the central defender.
The former Manchester United player has quite deservedly drawn high praise from fans and pundits for his impressive stint with the Baggies over the past couple of seasons. The Northern Ireland international has shown a great deal of defensive maturity for what looks like a struggling side in top flight English football. West Brom have just registered their first win after 21 league fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend and cannot afford to lose their best defender now that they have dropped to the relegation zone.
We could only witness the best out Jonny Evans when Alex Ferguson was at the helm at Manchester United. The retired Scotsman fielded Evans in the centre back role ahead of a lot of talented options and have won three league titles with him in the backline. West Brom have already lined up a move for Egyptian defender Ali Gabr to replace Evans and the transfer fee will allow Alan Pardew to make the necessary adjustments up front.
Leicester City have well improved on their previous season finish in the 12th spot and are currently competing for the European qualification spot behind the likes of Burnley and Arsenal. They were incredible against Chelsea last weekend and looked menacing throughout the 90 minutes.
The club has faced a season of highs and lows and are currently dealing with an injury to Danny Simpson. Daniel Amartey has been fielded in his place on the right and has struggled so far. A right-back signing should be a priority but a player like Evans can make all the difference.
The club is already stacked with a plethora of strikers who have been left unused for the majority of the season. Claude Puel has admitted the problem of rotating the squad and is looking to offload a couple of players to make way for a restructuring.
The injury to Wes Morgan is also a cause for concern and this makes the entire Evans approach well justified. Puel needs a captain to lead the backline and now with just 15 games left in the league, you cannot afford to slack off. However, can they beat the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal to land the highly rated centre-back?
