Leeds United are looking to sign Peterborough United forward Jack Marriott this month. According to recent reports, the Peacocks are set to battle with Hull City in pursuit of the League One star. The 23-year-old has been outstanding for the Posh this season with Harry Kane being the only Englishman to have outscored him so far.
Marriott enhanced his reputation even more after scoring a brace versus Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday to knock the Villans out of the prestigious competition and secure his side’s place in the fourth round where they will take on either Fleetwood Town or Leicester City at the ABAX Stadium.
The 23-year-old has burst into the scene after leaving Ipswitch Town in favor of a switch to Luton Town on a free transfer in 2015. He made 54 starts for the Hatters and found the back of the net 28 times to earn himself a move to League One side Peterborough United last summer where he has been in the form of his life so far.
Marriott has scored 23 goals and made 4 assists in 35 appearances for the Posh this season. His prolific goalscoring run has helped Peterborough climb to 9th place in the League One standings and now, a whole of host of clubs which include Leeds United and Hull City are ready to pounce on his signature this month.
Peterborough has a track record of being a springboard club for forwards as evidenced by the spells of Aaron McLean, Dwight Gayle, Craig Mackail-Smith, Britt Assombalonga and Conor Washington who all displayed their talents at London Road before moving on for tougher challenges.
Leeds United are currently occupying 6th place in the English Championship table and are well on course to securing a playoff spot at the end of the season. However, with Sheffield United, Fulham, Middlesborough and Preston all vying for the playoff positions, they are in dire need of reinforcements in January which might help them consolidate their position and secure a top 6 finish in the league. The Peacocks have scored 37 goals in 26 league matches which is not a bad record but they can boost their chances if Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen can sign someone of the potential of Jack Marriott.
He will definitely bolster their attack and improve their chances of securing a promotion going into the second half of the season if Leeds can match a reported £3m asking fee set by the League One side. It remains to be seen whether the Peacocks are successful in their attempts to lure the Peterborough star to Elland Road.
