Completely outplayed by Manchester United, Everton lost the fixture 0-2 at home. Controlling the majority of the possession, Jose Mourinho’s men looked threatening all throughout the 90 minutes.
Everton made it hard for the visitors to settle into the game early on but soon United started to get their rhythm going and piled on the pressure. They had no answers for Paul Pogba who dominated the midfield throughout the game.
After the first goal, Everton upped the tempo for a short period of time and threatened the United box but the visitors did not cave under pressure.
They kept driving towards the Everton half and an outstanding effort from Lingard ended the contest for good.
A disappointing loss for Toffees has now stretched their winless run to 4 games now. Although they have not dropped in the league standings, Leicester City have opened up a 3 point gap ahead of them in the 8th spot.
Not the best start to the new year.
Everton Player Ratings :
Jordan Pickford – 7/10
The two goals were completely out of his reach making his performance tonight a good one. Read the through balls early and made a few brilliant saves.
Mason Holgate – 6/10
Took over the right wing offensively for his side and was calm and composed at the back. However, grew a bit frustrated in the later stages and lunged in clumsily on Jese Lingard. Could have cost him.
Michael Keane – 7/10
Made crucial interceptions to stop the opposition attacks and win back possession for his side.
Ashley Williams – 4/10
His marking was completely off today and failed to keep up with the pace of Anthony Martial and Jese Lingard. Very poor distribution giving away possession on possible counter attacks.
Rhu-Endly Cuco Martina – 5/10
Martina could not really do anything going forward.
Tom Davies – 6/10
Worked tirelessly to chase after the opposition players and win possession for his side.
Morgan Schneiderlin – 5/10
Another game of highs and lows for the Frenchman who could barely keep up with the United midfield.
Nikola Vlasic – 3/10
Completely out of the picture in the opening minutes as well as the second half. Gave away possession majority of the times.
Wayne Rooney – 6/10
Rooney dictated the Everton gameplay offensively linking up with everybody from the deep positions.
Yannick Bolasie – 5/10
Still a bit rusty but showed us glimpses of his old self by taking on defenders from the wing.
Oumar Niasse – 5/10
Created the best opportunity to for Everton in the first half otherwise poor. Held onto the ball for too long and dropped into deep positions pointlessly instead of staying with the United defence.
Substitutes :
James McCarthy – 6/10
Did well defensively with a few crucial interceptions in the midfield area.
Aaron Lennon – 4/10
Other than winning a couple of free kicks, mostly ineffective.
