Wigan Athletic could face a stern task of keeping attacking sensation Nick Powell at the club this January with a host of Premier League clubs reportedly showing interest in the former Manchester United midfielder.
Nick Powell made his breakthrough at Crewe Alexandria many years ago before he signed Manchester United in the summer of 2012 for a fee of €7.5m. However, his stint at Premier League turned out to be a flop, as the midfielder only managed nine competitive outings for the Red Devils before being sent off to numerous loan spells.
The 23-year-old, however, made a permanent move to Wigan Athletic at the start of last season and since then, the English midfielder seems to have regained his form. The Crewe-born Nick Powell is an important player for a Wigan team, hoping to get promoted to the Championships next year.
The former Manchester United man helped his club maintain their status as table-toppers, scoring an impressive eleven goals, most by any Wigan player.
According to reports, his blistering performances in League One has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs including West Brom, Southampton and Crystal Palace.
Crystal Palace, in particular, have shown a keen interest in bringing the former English prodigy into the Selhurst Park this season.
Following a difficult start to the season, the Eagles have somewhat managed to turn their dreadful season into a decent one as they currently stand 12th in the league table. However, Roy Hodgson’s men have always lacked the presence of a recognized central attacking midfielder this season and therefore, Nick Powell could be an interest addition to the Eagles.
Blessed with technical abilities and great vision, Nick Powell is someone who can either make a huge impact or completely disappoint. Former United coach Alex Ferguson envisioned him as the successor of Paul Scholes, thanks to his great passing abilities. His recent stint at Wigan has shown that the midfielder also has an eye for goal.
Furthermore, Nick Powell’s move to Crystal Palace could a lot of sense considering the fact that the Eagles may lose their attacking sensation Wilfried Zaha in the January window. Therefore, the 23-year-old could prove to be the necessary attacking reinforcement Palace needed in order to shape up their season on a positive note come the end of this season.
