Chelsea receive a huge boost ahead of their FA Cup third round draw against Norwich City through the positive statements released by Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian shot stopper’s £100,000 contract is set to end in another 18 months with talks of an extension circulating around the club ranks.
When asked about his contract situation, the 25-year-old said that he is currently happy with the club and a deal is currently being prepared. Still too young to hit your prime, Courtois believes that he can do so while playing for the Blues in the future.
He has won 2 Premier League titles in his 4 years with the club would like to stack up the trophy cabinet furthermore in the coming years.
Of course, his performances have drawn the attention of many European clubs including Spanish powerhouse, Real Madrid. The Galacticos are currently concentrating more on Courtois than his positional rival in the league, David de Gea. Madrid had previously been heavily linked with the de Gea but after watching Courtois’ impressive display over the years they are considering a huge bid to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Even though their first choice keeper, Keylor Navas has fulfilled his duties in between the sticks he does not quite replicate the quality of the Belgian. Courtois huge 6 feet 6 inches stature is a domineering presence in the defensive backline paired with the agility and intelligence he adds to his game. He has registered 7 clean sheets this season and was brilliant for the Blues in their 2-2 draw against rivals, Arsenal last night.
Courtois’s compatriot Eden Hazard has reportedly turned down an extension offer from the bosses of Stamford Bridge with the hopes of making a move to Madrid as well. Hazard’s future is also uncertain with Chelsea and can somehow make an impact in Courtois’s decision to sign.
He was quoted saying, “Losing a player like Eden would be bad for us, the club. Eden is irreplaceable. With the money he will raise, you can buy five players but none of them will be like Eden. It would be like Barcelona losing Lionel Messi or Real Madrid losing Cristiano Ronaldo.”
The Bree-born goalkeeper believes that he can convince Hazard to tie his future with the club in order to uphold the ambitions of Chelsea. Even though both of them are being chased by Madrid their chances of winning silverware are not being diminished by confirming their future with the most successful club in England over the past decade.
After hearing the words of Courtois, the fans can seemingly rest easy knowing that at least one of their Belgian talents is likely to stay at the club.
