One of the areas Celtic would be keen to address in the ongoing transfer window is their defence. On many occasions, Brendan Rodgers found himself bereft of options at the back owing to injuries to his dependable players and at times, he has had to station midfielder, Nir Bitton, at the centre-back slot in order to cater to the defensive needs of his side.
The Bhoys are placed at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with 51 points to their name after 22 games and have a lead of 8 points over second-placed side, Aberdeen. However, having failed in the Champions League once again, they would need reinforcements to not only better their prospects in the coming season but will also have to continue their domestic superiority.
As per one of the latest reports, Celtic have put Dundee’s defender, Jack Hendry, on their radar and is expected to cost £500,000. Apart from the Celts, their arch rivals, Rangers, are also in hot pursuit of making him sign on the dotted line. Implicitly, it would be a tug of war between the two clubs and it would be intriguing to see which club gets the final laugh.
Hendry joined Dundee in the summer and has proved to be a handy commodity at the back for his club. He has played on 22 occasions for the Dee so far this season and his impressive performances have caught a lot of attention from the football fraternity. The Hoops are thus desirous to lure him to the Celtic Park to strengthen their backline.
He initially started his career with Partick Thistle and then went to Wigan Athletic, but failed to found his feet. Loan spells with Shrewsbury Town and MK Dons helped him to steady himself a bit but it was after his move to Dens Park where he started to derive the best out of him. The 22-year-old is being compared with Manchester City’s centre-back, John Stones, and he has proven his calibre in the Scottish football this season.
He is a strong player who possesses the requisite pace in his legs and despite his young age, he reads the game meticulously and clears the danger in a pretty commendable fashion. Rodgers does need someone with experience of Scottish football and given that Hendry could be signed with a very moderate fee, they must snap up the opportunity before other vultures come and take him away to their ranks.
