Celtic are interested in signing Scottish defender Jack Hendry. The 22-year-old Glasgow-born defender currently plies his trade for Dundee but could well be dawning a new jersey come February 1st. He was subjected to a failed £500,000 bid in the beginning of the month from Celtic. It seems that the Hoops have now returned for the player and want to add him to their roster.
They have now offered £1 million for the young centre-back but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to enforce a deal with Dundee boss Neil McCann holding out for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.5 million.
Dundee are currently ninth in the table with 25 points on board after 24 matches. The club has little chances of finishing in the top five, something that could sway the trade in favour of Celtic who are sitting at the top of the tree.
As for Celtic, it is not regular to think that a side who lost 7-1 in Europe in one midweek to be league leaders in the domestic circuit. However, Celtic’s domestic performances have been very contrasting to their European form this season. While in the Scottish Premier League they have been nothing but ruthless and dominating, their Champions League adventure saw them struggle in front of the European powerhouses.
Celtic have won eighteen and drawn six in the league and lost just once. However, as one might recall, they opened their Champions League campaign with a heavy drubbing at the hands of Paris Saint Germain and were again reminded of the gulf in class between the two sides in their last outing when they were thrashed 7-1.
They, however, still clinched the third spot and qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League, once again reminding Europe that they are there and thereabout. With the club managing to hang around in Europe and a domestic season where they look set to clinch another title, a new addition to the team is not the worst idea.
Rodgers has put together a young team at Celtic Park and after adding fresh talent in the form of Chelsea winger Charly Musonda to the attack, it seems he is ready to plug the minor gaps in defences by bringing in Hendry. Although the youngster is not expected to play regularly in the first team, he might get enough match time to keep on improving his game. Moreover, for Celtic, it would allow them to rotate their backline with ease and ensure no player suffers from a burnout.
