A nine-year spell at England’s premier competition came to an end last season when Sunderland was finally relegated last year. The club probably survived more relegation wars in the last ten years than the number of goals they scored last season. However, it was doom spelt all along for the Black Cats last season and after finishing rock bottom, they moved down to the Championship.
Things have not gone well for the Black Cats well this season either. Sunderland has just won one of their 15 league matches this season and with only 10 points on the board, they stand in the relegation zone. The club is rock bottom, 24th in the Championship and looks set for the drop again.
Amidst the terrible season they are having, one of their bright spots was the form of on-loan striker Lewis Grabban. The 29-year old was in hot form for the Black Cats scoring 12 goals in 20 games for them. Sunderland’s joy has been shortlived as Grabban’s loan spell has mutually terminated by both them and his parent club, Bournemouth. The Cherries have recalled the striker but if latest reports are to be believed, they are ready to send him out again, only this time on a permanent basis.
With Grabban in hot form, there are plenty of clubs in the Championship interested in securing the services of the English professional. A host of Championship clubs like Aston Villa, Wolves, Fulham, Bristol City and Middlesborough is keen on bringing in the forward to bolster their ranks. However, it appears that one club has skipped ahead of the queue to sign the 29-year-old.
High flying championship side Cardiff City is said to have completed advanced talks to bring in the forward to their team. Cardiff City is in great nick this season and the side is third in the Championships currently. The Bluebirds are on 50 points and within reach of second place Derby County who currently have 52 points.
Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City has scored 40 goals in their 27 games, averaging less than 1.5 goals per game. The stats do not do justice to a side in top three and if his men are to challenge for the top two to secure automatic promotion into next year’s English Premier League, Warnock could do with an additional striker.
Grabban would be a perfect addition to his team at the moment having already experienced the intensity of the league while playing for Sunderland earlier this season.
