Brighton have yet to add to their first team squad in the January window, but they are have already made two additions to their under 23 squad. Below are the two signings that Brighton have added to their U23/development squad and the third who look set to join them in this window.
Victor Gyokeres:
The first of these was agreed back in September to sign on the first day of the transfer window and this was the capture of Swedish striker Gyokeres from IF Brommapojkarna on a two-and-a-half-year-deal. The 19-year-old had made 28 appearances for Brommapojkarna since joining in 2015 and scored seven goals. He also impressed in the summer for the Swedish U19’s at the European U19’s Championships where he finished the tournaments joint top scorer with three goals.
The striker has represented Sweden at both U18 and U19 level. The striker has linked up with the development squad and will be looking to impress over the next year or so in the hope of trying to force his way into the first team.
Warren O’Hora:
The second signing was the capture of Irish defender O’Hora from Irish side Bohemians on a two-and-a-half-year-deal. The Centre half had progressed through the academy at Bohemians before breaking into the first team and making eleven appearances. O’Hora has also represented the Republic Of Ireland at both U18 and U19 level.
O’Hora has also linked up with the development squad and speaking to the club’s website, Brightonandhovealbion.com, U23′ coach, Simon Rusk said: “We’re pleased to secure the services of Warren after he impressed during a couple of training sessions before Christmas.
“He’s had some good experience playing in Ireland’s Premier Division last season, and he’ll certainly add to the competition we already have in central defence.
“We’re delighted to welcome him to the club and are keen to contribute towards his continued development as a footballer.”
The Seagulls are also set to add another youth player to their ranks this window, with The Argus reporting that Albion are poised to see off competition from Everton, Newcastle and Celtic to sign Hearts midfielder Marc Leonard.
The 16-year-old has progressed through the ranks in the youth academy and is currently playing for Hearts U20’s. The midfielder has also been capped internationally by Scotland at both U16 and U17 level.
The Scottish midfielder’s main position is in the centre of the midfield but he can also play as an attacking midfielder or as a second striker, which makes him quite a versatile young player.
One thing is for sure is it is good to see Albion have one eye on the future and not just the present and hopefully with these prospects added to the academy as well some talented players that are already there to play at world-class facilities like the AMEX Stadium and the training ground , in a few years time we will start seeing some of them breaking into the first team squad.
