Premier League leaders Manchester City have managed to tie down Fernandinho to a new contract as the Brazilian International pens a contract extension till 2020.
Fernandinho has been in outstanding form this season but considering the fact that he is slowly reaching the final stage of his career, does this contract make sense for the Sky Blues?
Recently described by Pep Guardiola as “One of three best holding midfielders in the world“, Fernandinho’s performance in midfield has been instrumental in City’s record start this season. The Brazilian midfielder has been a key part of their setup, making 30 appearances in all competitions.
Fernandinho himself feels he can be a part of something big under current coach Pep Guardiola.
“With Pep in charge, I feel sure we can win significant silverware and, importantly, we will try to do it playing the attractive and attacking football.
“It’s a pleasure to be a part of this Club and I look forward to seeing what the next few years bring.” – he added.
The former Shakhtar man is just about everything coach Pep Guardiola could hope for in the holding midfield position. Not only does he make a regular contribution to the defensive side of the game but he also creates a decent number of opportunities throughout the season. Furthermore, his passing accuracy of 90% is an excellent statistic while his physical prowess and aerial ability help Manchester City dominate their opposing midfield week in week out.
That being said, however, at 32 years young, Fernandinho is not getting younger and his level of performance might soon deteriorate. Not to mention the fact that the speedy nature of the Premier League might force him to make uncharacteristic mistakes, thanks to his lack of pace.
Although he’s currently the perfect candidate for the holding midfield job at Manchester City, the Sky Blues may soon to find a proper replacement for the Brazilian International.
Someone like Julian Weigl or Eric Dier could provide to be intriguing additions to the Manchester City side.
Overall, however, Fernandinho’s contract extension can only be a good thing for the club as it secures the future of the Brazilian, who has proved to be an important midfield asset for the league leaders.
As Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “We’re delighted Ferna has signed his new contract. He is a senior member of the squad and his professionalism and work ethic are second to none.
“His form has been fantastic this season and we’re happy he’s extended his deal for a further two years.”
