Wigan Athletic’s midfielder, Nick Powell, is sending ripples in League One this season owing to his dazzling run of form. The former Manchester United midfielder has scored 11 goals in 23 appearances in the league and has certainly drawn a lot of attention from the football fraternity. As per one of the latest reports by TeamTalk, Aston Villa have emerged as one of the candidates interested to make him sign on the dotted line.
However, it would not be easy for the Villans to sign him as the likes of Derby County, Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion are also keenly monitoring him. Considering the resurrection he has cultivated in his career after his flop show with the Red Devils, interest from other club had to arrive and the Latics are believed to have slapped a price tag of £1.5million on his collar.
Powell is a talented player who has brought a lot of fluidity in the attacking endeavours of Paul Cook’s side. Goals from midfielders are always appreciated and Powell has certainly provided an adequate amount of goals and has been able to create ample amount of goal scoring chances for his teammates as well. The Tics are placed at the top of League One table and the Englishman has played a pivotal role in constructing such a stature.
Under the tutelage of Steve Bruce, Aston Villa have been quite decent in the Championship so far. The Lions are very much in the race for promotion to the Premier League, being currently placed at the 4th spot in the league standings with 47 points to their name from 27 games. However, there are many clubs in contention for promotion.
The animosity in the second-half of the season is seemingly likely to increase and thus, Bruce would certainly need to refuel his tank. Their apparent interest to sign Powell does make sense, for he would be able to offer goals and creativity from the middle. Powell is a smart midfielder who is good in the air and maintains a fine balance between his attacking and defensive duties.
He holds on to the ball well, something that is desired in English football and gallops forward every time he finds an opportunity to test the defence of the opposition. Aston Villa might have plenty of options for their midfield, but the 23-year-old would be able to inject some freshness and offer an appealing option for Bruce.
