The Sun has reported that Arsenal are ready to make a last minute swoop for highly-rated Schalke midfielder, Max Meyer. The 22-year-old’s contract is set to end after this season and Arsene Wenger is ready to bring him to Emirates for a nominal transfer fee. Meyer has managed just 1 goal and 1 assist in his 21 all around appearances this season and the low stat line can be attributed to him being shifted to the holding midfield role.
Meyer started out his footballing campaign as an attacking midfielder from the youth ranks of the Royal Blues and burst into the scene with an impressive debut season. Ever since Lewis Holtby departed from the Veltins-Arena, Meyer’s has seen himself get featured in the shadow striker role and was handed the number seven jersey in the 2013/14 season, the number last worn by Raul himself.
Standing at just 5 feet 8 inches tall, Meyer has mesmerized the fans in the Bundesliga with his silky dribbling abilities and creative instincts to link up the Schalke abilities. Fast feet paired with an agile body allows him to drift into tight spaces around the box and is a handful for opposition defenders.
Schalke have already lost Leon Goretzka on a free transfer to Bayern Munich and might be on the verge of losing another one of their young stars. Arsenal have already capitalized on Sead Kolasinac’s contract situation and successfully signed him up last summer. The German outfit has turned into a charitable organization for the European elites and this is a huge cause of concern among the Miners fans.
Reports have indicated that Arsenal have just managed to extend the contract of Mesut Ozil to a three-and-a-half-year more and that is on top of signing Borussia Dortmund ace, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They also have received Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez. The North London are covered on the attacking midfield front and have options in Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere.
The club has seen Francis Coquelin make an exit to La Liga outfit, Valencia and while Mohamed Elneny has taken up the defensive responsibilities, Max Meyer is not the best candidate to replace the 26-year-old Frenchman.
Arsene Wenger has somehow wrenched out a win from what looked like a losing situation. He has tied down the services of the esteemed German maestro Mesut Ozil with a new mega-deal and this will allow him to rotate the squad around ahead of the Europa League campaign next month. Hopefully, the move will be good enough for the Gunners and they will not need the services of someone like Meyer with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubmeyang to strengthen their squad.
This shows why Arsenal definitely do not need the Schalke man. Also on top of that, with no hope of a replacement, why would Schalke sanction such a move. We at The 4th Official believe there is a better chance of seeing a flying unicorn than this deal happening tonight.
