Arsenal are plotting a move for Corinthians youngster Maycon after keeping tabs on his progress over the last few years. According to recent reports in the English media, the 20-year-old Brazilian has been gathering interest from the north London side who has sent scouts to watch him in action in the past few seasons. The midfielder has put in some dazzling displays for Corinthians last year which has impressed the Gunners chiefs and reports back to the club have been positive.
It is believed that Corinthians wants a fee in the region of £9m for their prized asset but will demand him to be loaned back to Brazil as part of the offer. Maycon has also attracted interest from Serie A giants Napoli, among a whole host of other European clubs. A source mentioned by an English news outlet has stated,
“Arsenal are very interested in Maycon. He has been watched a fair amount for more than a year.
“They have been impressed and he has a promising future. He is not really a player for now.
“There could be issues with getting him a visa. It would take a lot of work behind the scenes to get sorted.
“Arsenal have other priorities, so it could be one that happens in the summer, rather than now.”
Arsenal has already acquired the services of Henrikh Mkhitaryan last week and is now looking to make a few more additions in this transfer window. The Gunners have fallen off the pace in the race to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League this season. The north London outfit are currently sitting in 6th place in the Premier League standings with a tally of 42 points after Gameweek 24, five points behind 4th placed Liverpool.
They could do with some new arrivals this month in their quest to push for a top 4 place in the second half of the season. Although Maycon’s arrival probably won’t help them this season, the youngster may potentially develop into a future star under the guidance of Arsene Wenger in the coming years. The Gunners have already shown that they are not afraid to give their young players a chance in Wenger’s first-team as evidenced by the rapid rise of players like Aaron Ramsay, Jack Wilshere and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in recent years which makes it the perfect place for the Brazilian to fulfil his potential.
It remains to be seen whether the north Londoners are successful in their efforts to fend off stiff competition and lure Maycon to the Emirates Stadium in the near future.
