The 28-year old midfielder arrived to Swansea City from La Liga this summer and was a big money move for the Swans. His signature was a highlighted move as he was a popular player in the La Liga having recorded statistics of a 91.4 percent pass completion rate, the fourth best in a league constituting the likes of Isco, Iniesta, Modric, and company.
However, things have not exactly gone to plan for the Spanish midfielder. He had barely featured for Paul Clement’s side this season and has only played 756 minutes of Premier League action overall even after Carlos Carvalhal’s appointment. The most striking stat is the fact that in this duration he has been unable to create or score a single goal for the Swans.
It is not exactly the signing they were hoping for having spent such a huge amount on him. His frustrating time at the club has compounded on the club’s misery who are currently in the 20th spot on the table, three points off the safety zone and fighting relegation.
It now seems that the Swans are ready to part ways with the stylish midfielder and here are three players they can look at to replace Mesa.
Nick Powell
The English player failed to impress at Manchester United where he made only 9 appearances in four years. He subsequently moved to Wigan in 2016 where he has impressed for the Latics.
He would prove to be another cheaper alternative for Swansea as Wigan are reportedly ready to give in to any incoming party seeking Powell and have placed a fee of £1.5 million should Swansea wish to pry away Powell from the League One club.
Thomas Cairney
The 26-year-old has been in excellent form this season at Craven Cottage. Fulham, who made it clear that they are not ready to part ways with any of their players and instead wants to bring in a few new faces, might be the major stumbling block in the progress of the deal.
Cairney has scored around 22 goals in over 100 appearances for Fulham and would be a good deal for Swansea City, given his football dynamics. However, agreeing on a deal with a Fulham side who will in no way want to lose their captain will be difficult.
Étienne Capoue
French defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue has spent two happy years at Watford. The midfielder who can also play as a defender was brought in by Watford in the first week of July in 2015. Brought in from Tottenham Hotspur where he failed to get a regular starting berth, he was expected to be a mainstay at Watford. The player known for his stunning long-range goals has impressed in his two years at Watford. However, since the injury spell that saw him sidelined, the Frenchman has been unable to return to the starting eleven and is growing frustrated with his time on the bench. He could prove to be a steal for Swansea if they negotiate well.
