Abel Hernandez has informed Hull City that he no longer wishes to stay with the club once his current contract expires at the end of the current season. The Uruguayan forward began the season in good fashion but now wants a move back to Italy.
“I lived six years in Italy and I was very well. I can still give a lot to the Italian championship. I’m more mature, I have experience”, he said. “We will see in the summer. In the summer I will be free, I will not renew with Hull City. We will see the best solution.”
He was, however, injured early in the season and is yet to play again for the Tigers.
He said: “I’m recovering well. I’m in the last phase of recovery, I’ll have to work again for two or three weeks and then I’ll be available to the team.”
With Hernandez set to leave next season, here are three forwards who can replace him at Hull City.
Dwight Gayle
The striker who graduated from the Arsenal youth academy was in seriously good form last season when he helped Rafa Benitez’s men qualify for the English Premier League by clinching the Championship title. He has, however, been unable to repeat his heroics this time around leaving Newcastle in a tough state. The Magpies have endured a mixed start to their campaign in England’s top league. After a quick start, Newcastle United flopped and their loss in form saw them sink to the lower end of the table. Should Benitez get a new forward this January, Hull could target Gayle as a potential replacement.
Lewis Grabban
Grabban has cut his loan spell with Sunderland short and has currently returned to his parent club, Bournemouth. His contract with the Cherries is set to end after another 18 months and multiple clubs are sniffing around for a transfer. Grabban has been in prolific form this season before hitting an injury snag during the Christmas period. He has netted an impressive 12 goals in 20 appearances for the Black Cats this season.
The 29-year-old striker is a versatile presence in the opposition box and is currently on the best form of his life. His Sunderland display will not only earn him a lucrative deal but he can make a major impact while playing for another side.
Firmin Mubele
The Congolese footballer who plays for Stade Rennais was approached by Newcastle in the summer, failed to secure a move to the Premier League. The versatile player who primarily plays as a winger but can also play as a striker has played 19 games this season and has scored 5 goals and set up two more. He can be the third option for the Tigers.
