West Ham United showed signs of recovery as they tame down a strong Chelsea in the Premier League to provide a new twist to the title race. The Hammers took an early lead through Marko Arnautovic and sat back tightly to hold on to their lead as they denied the Blues any chance of hitting an equalizer.
David Moyes would surely be impressed by his team’s performance as this win put them on the edge of the relegation zone in 18th position and their survival chances could be back on the track.
However, Moyes is likely to demand a few players in a bid to re-energise the rescue attempt in January transfer window. West Ham have been linked with Uruguayan winger Federico Martinez.
Martinez plays for Liverpool Montevideo and tipped to be a huge future prospect. The winger is one of the most touted names in the South American football and as expected a number of clubs are vying for his signature.
Martinez came through the academy of Liverpool Montevideo and gradually he has become an integral part of the senior setup. The left winger has had a considerable amount of game time with the senior side so it won’t be difficult for him acclimatise to the condition.
He will be available for a paltry £5m and the Hammers should make this count. Moyes desperately needs some inspiration in the attacking third and he could be the biggest coup.
Other Premier League clubs with the likes of Swansea City and Everton are also keeping a tab on him while European giants AS Roma, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are considering offers for the youngster.
Martinez has been likened to Angel Di Maria and he could be the next superstar. Watford decided to bet big on Richarlison whom they brought in from Fluminense in this summer and the 20-year-old has been a huge hit in the Premier League already racking up five goals and four assists already.
So the benchmark set by the Premier League is already very high and Martinez could become the latest entrant in the most competitive league in the world. He has featured for the Uruguay U17 side and now is in the line to breaking into the senior side.
Hammers splashed their cash heavily in the summer but the results haven’t been encouraging and the club hierarchy is likely to have another shot in the transfer market and Martinez could be the first of many.
