West Bromwich Albion are plotting an audacious move for FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas. It is being reported that FC Porto wants to part ways with the Spanish goalkeeper who is currently the second choice keeper at the club and their decision is mainly due to Financial Fair Play reasons as they can’t afford to pay his high wages. Casillas fancies a move to England’s top tier and is confident about his chances of having a go in Premier League football. The former Real Madrid keeper has not featured for the Portuguese side since October.
FC Porto are desperate to offload their keeper so as to try and avoid a Financial Fair Play penalty and it is being reported that they won’t ask for a transfer fee from any interested parties in their attempts to sell the keeper. Meanwhile, Casillas has told Porto that he is willing to leave without his due payment of wages until the end of the season. This has paved the way for a potential move to England where the 36-year-old keeper wants to try his luck and test himself.
Recent reports have suggested that the agents of the Spanish keeper have been in contact with West Brom along with a whole host of clubs ahead of a meeting with FC Porto officials.
Casillas was the captain of the national side when Spain won the World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 respectively. He has also won three European Cups and five La Liga titles with Real Madrid along with other major honours. There’s nothing else for the keeper to win expect a new adventure with potentially a team in England.
West Brom are currently struggling in the Premier League and find themselves in 19th place in the league table, two points off safety. The Baggies manager Alan Pardew has found life hard in West Midlands and could do with a world cup winner in his ranks. West Brom has conceded 24 goals in 18 league matches with their keeper Ben Foster failing to get a consistent run of form going.
Alan Pardew will do well to convince Casillas into joining them at the Hawthorns but it remains to be seen whether the Baggies can match his wage demands. However, if they can pull it off, Casillas can bring in a wealth of experience which would help them a great deal in their quest to save themselves from a possible relegation in the second half of the campaign.
