West Bromwich Albion are considering making a move for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris. Some sources are claiming that the Baggies has kept tabs on the player and watched him in action at the start of this month. They are currently monitoring his situation in Portugal and can move in with a concrete offer soon.
New manager Alan Pardew has struggled to put a halt to West Brom’s misfortunes in the league so far and will be hoping that some clever additions when the transfer window commences in January might be enough for them to turn the tide and avoid a potential relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season. One of these additions could be Andreas Samaris who can come in and do a job for the Baggies in their quest to secure Premier League football for next season.
The West Midlands club sent out scouts to watch him in action recently when Benfica took on FC Basel in the Champions League group-stages. The 28-year-old has already been a subject of interest from West Brom after the club attempted to recruit him in the summer. However, the Baggies failed to land the player back then and may now consider going in for him again. Hopefully, the club will be in for a better luck this time as they are in dire need of some quality next month.
Samaris joined Benfica from Olympiacos in the summer of 2014. He has struggled to secure regular, first-team football in the top tier of Portuguese football this campaign and has only appeared in 12 matches for the Portuguese giants so far. The Greek international has found the back of the net just once this season and will be looking to improve in the coming months. The 28-year-old is highly versatile and can play in any of the central midfield positions or as a right-back. The Baggies can definitely make use of his versatility as the fixtures come in thick and fast in the Premier League which might increase the chance of injuries to squad members.
West Brom are in the relegation zone right now and sit second from bottom in the Premier League standings. They have only managed to taste victory twice this season which is a cause for concern. However, with some shrewd reinforcements like Samaris in January, Pardew will keep his fingers crossed in their battle to save themselves from relegation. It remains to be seen whether the Baggies go back in and make a formal offer for the midfielder in the near future.
