Sheer dominance from Tottenham Hotspur as they overcame Southampton 5-2 in tonight’s fixture. The Saints were completely outplayed by Mauricio Pochettino’s men right from the start.
The attacking lineup of the Spurs moved through the opposition half like a coordinated orchestra with Harry Kane breaking the deadlock just after 20 minutes into the game. Once they started, they did not stop running at Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.
Southampton, however, did not give up completely even after going 4-0 down. Sofiane pulled one back in the 64th minute with a low driven shot from the cross of Shane Long.
But Kane delivered the final dagger almost immediately from Dele Alli’s through ball with a delightful chip over Fraser Forster.
Player Ratings:
Hugo Lloris – 4/10
Both the goals could have been better dealt with. Top keepers do not become complacent so easily and need to stay sharp in between the sticks even when their side is up by a big margin.
Serge Aurier – 6/10
He was a big threat down the right with his pace but could have put in better deliveries.
Danny Rose – 6/10
Won the early freekick which resulted in the first goal but it still shaky after coming back from injury.
Davinson Sanchez – 7/10
The 21-year-old was firm with his tackles today and almost got the better of Long.
Jan Vertonghen – 8/10
Lead the backline with a formidable display against the pace of the Saints attack.
Eric Dier – 6/10
Mostly fielded for his defensive abilities Dier did not have much to do today.
Mousa Dembele – 5/10
Not the usual performance we expect from Dembele with a lot of loose touches, especially in tight spaces.
Son Heung-Min – 8/10
A quiet first half of game but the South Korean burst into life in the second netting the 3rd and the 4th goal for Spurs.
Christian Eriksen – 6/10
Still, the classy magician with a deft touch on the ball, the Dane drilled a perfect freekick towards Kane to get the first goal.
Dele Alli – 8/10
Completely deceived the Southampton defence with his clever runs as he got himself one goal and an assist. Could have scored a couple more towards the later stages.
Harry Kane – 9/10
Calmness personified. The man did no wrong on and off the ball with Southampton defence dancing to his spells.
Substitutes:
Moussa Sissoko – 6/10
Came on for Dembele in the 54th minute but struggled to adjust to the unfamiliar position.
