From what has transpired so far in the Premier League this season, Manchester City have seemingly appeared to be the side favourite to clinch the prestigious silverware. The blue half of Manchester have collected 58 points from 20 games and have lost none and drawn just one game so far in the top division, thus appearing unstoppable. However, it is the race to finish inside the top four which should be absolutely intriguing to watch in the coming months.
Tottenham Hotspur are one of the sides which would mount a serious competition to Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea for a Champions League berth and the North Londoners do have the calibre to do the same. Spurs have 37 points from 20 fixtures and are currently placed at the 5th spot in the table, but it goes without saying that Mauricio Pochettino would be aiming to get reinforcements in the January transfer market to beef up the quality of his squad.
Interestingly, reports have been emerging lately that Pochettino is perceived to be desirous to bring Vincent Janssen back from his loan spell with Fenerbahce. Jannsen was shipped out to the Turkish outfit in the summer to prove his mettle. The speculations of his prospective return raise a lot of eyebrows, for he hasn’t really dazzled with Fenerbahce so far in his spell, having bagged merely a couple of goals alongside as many assists in the Turkish top flight.
The 23-year-old was signed by the Lilywhites in the summer of 2016, but he failed to cement his place in their side. For a fee, which is believed to be around £17million, he hardly justified his price tag as he managed to score merely 6 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Spurs. At this stroke of hour, Pochettino considers Harry Kane as his preferred choice for the striker’s role, with Fernando Llorente as the no.2, and it would be intriguing to see what happens with Llorente if Jannsen is recalled.
Spurs do need to beef up their attack to face the animosity of busy schedules that lie ahead of them in the second half of the season and probably Pochettino will be trying to get his side’s offensive needs sorted by recalling Jannsen. The Dutch international is indeed a decent striker, who is still young and is in his learning stages and what he needs is some confidence behind him to put his career back on track.
