Tottenham Hotspurs are currently monitoring the progress of FC Basel forward, Dimitri Oberlin ahead of the January transfer window. Reports claim that a bid might be placed within 48 hours to rival the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United.
Oberlin has been predicted to be a potential superstar since the age of 15 but his reputation as a difficult talent to manage saw him struggle to get his professional career going.
The Cameroon-born forward is a versatile presence in the attacking lineup for FC Basel and has been a key component for the side after moving from Red Bull Salzburg on a season-long loan spell. Blessed with electric pace down the stretch he is a nightmare for fullbacks and centre-backs who often fall prey to his incredible dribbling abilities.
He has re-established himself as one of the hottest talents in Europe with 8 goals and 1 assist in 23 appearances.
The 20-year-old’s character is quite complicated and has made a few questionable moves in his career. Judging by the words of the Basel team planner, Remo Gaugler, the Swiss U-21 international could have been playing for one of the elite clubs of Europe. He had previously rejected a move to Manchester United and RB Leipzig.
Tottenham swooped in on ex-Swansea City striker, Fernando Llorente in the summer to take up the second-striker role behind Harry Kane. But the 32-year-old has not found his feet at the club with just 1 goal in 18 appearances for the club this season. Kane has resumed his show of class in front of goal this season with 18 goals already and is looking hungry for more. However, a second striker with an effective conversion rate is highly necessary to guide Mauricio Pochettino’s men to a successful end to the season.
Tottenham have surpassed their own expectations in the European competitions and has finished above Real Madrid in the group stages. Their impressive display, however, came at a cost with the side dropping precious points in the Premier League. The task of rotating a squad to compete in multiple competitions has been hard for Pochettino with a lack of quality options on the bench.
With Georges-Kévin N’Koudou and Moussa Sissoko failing to make a significant impact for the Spurs and Llorente’s best years far behind him, an attacker of Oberlin’s stature can be a good inclusion for the London club. The youngster can appear from either of the wing positions alongside Kane with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen behind him.
