Reluctant to appraise transfer rumours, Paul Clement of Swansea City replied, “No comment” when asked about the possibility of the Welsh side signing FC Porto striker, Vincent Aboubakar. The 25-year-old has been in remarkable form with 22 goals scored in 25 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese side. Last year he played a season-long loan spell for Turkish giants, Beşiktaş J.K. and found the back of the net 19 times on 38 outings.
Criticised for his disciplinary composure after collecting 3 red cards last season, Aboubakar is clearly a force to be reckoned with and had been linked to Swansea previously in the summer of 2017. Reports claim that the Swans are reigniting their interest in the Cameroon international to revive their current campaign and dig themselves out of the relegation spots by the end of the season.
Swansea’s American owners, Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien have not yet set an ultimatum for Clement. Even after the side’s reported dressing room confrontations among players after their 2-1 defeat to Stoke City on Saturday, the manager reassured his belief in the side.
He will be provided with investment opportunities to strengthen the squad in January and enter the new year with a fresh boost of motivation and talent. Their performance in the remaining December schedule will be crucial to attract talents and fulfil their ambitions of staying in the Premier League by season end.
It may be too soon to say but they might already have started to turn things around judging by their 1-0 win against West Brom at home. A win after 7 Premier League games.
Losing Gylfi Sigurðsson to Everton in the beginning of the season has clearly left a huge gap in the attacking structure of the club. Summer arrivals Renato Sanches, Roque Mesa and Wilfried Bony do not possess all the skills of the Icelandic international and have so far been poor for the Swans. Chelsea loanee, Tammy Abraham is the clubs leading scorer with 5 goals and 1 assist to his name. The signing of Abraham and Bony were cheaper options for the club and prevented the move of Aboubakar from materialising.
Although on the lookout for an attacking midfielder Swansea will benefit monumentally from the talents of Aboubakar. The striker was eager to move to the side when transfer rumours first surfaced in the summer. He was quoted, “I’m going to England, Swansea has a proposal. I do not want to miss it. I talked to my manager, I do not want to miss the offer Swansea offers.”
