Newcastle United are plotting a January move for Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge. According to latest sources, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is “pushing hard” for a deal to take place when the transfer window opens next month with the club currently looking to take him on loan to try and lower the cost. A report in the Northern Echo claims that the Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley is not willing to pay the forward £125,000-a-week but would agree to loan him if the “financial goalposts” were to change.
The Tyneside are in dire need to make a few additions in January following the club’s dismal recent record in the Premier League which has seen the Magpies not taste victory in any of their previous nine league matches. Benitez is adamant to secure a forward in January so that they can start scoring goals regularly in the league in a bid to save themselves from a relegation dogfight in the second half of the season.
The 22-year-old English international has been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield after falling down the pecking order at Anfield this season. Roberto Firmino’s terrific form has kept him out of Jurgen Klopp’s squad with the German manager preferring Dominic Solanke as a backup option than an injury-prone Sturridge.
The Reds of Merseyside have scored 38 goals in 18 games which is the third highest in the Premier League. Their record of late proves that everything is going well in attack for Jurgen Klopp’s men. The 28-year-old former Chelsea and Manchester City striker needs to find regular game-time as he attempts to overcome his injury problems in his quest to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The English poacher has realised that his opportunities are limited at Anfield and he needs to move into greener pastures which the Tyneside club will be more than willing to provide.
Newcastle United currently find themselves in the relegation zone following their wretched run of form in the Premier League for the past few weeks. One of their major problems has been the lack of goalscoring up top. All of their strikers with the exclusion of Dwight Gayle has struggled to find their goal-scoring touch in this campaign. It’s high time for the club to move on and get someone of Sturridge’s ability to bang in the goals for the Toon Army in their quest to avoid the drop.
Sturridge has bags of Premier League experience and has been a goal threat whenever he is on the pitch. A possible loan deal might be the ideal solution for the Magpies but it remains to be seen whether they are able to convince the striker to move to Tyneside with other Premier League clubs likely to join in on the race.
