David Luiz’s successful comeback to English Premier League in the last term helped his side, Chelsea, to lift the Premier League trophy. However, it seems that the love affair between the player and the club is on the verge of ending as the Brazilian might be on his way out of Stamford Bridge in the near future after an alleged spat with gaffer Antonio Conte in the recent past.
Luiz’s first spell in England saw the Brazilian winning two European cups and then he ended up leaving after losing his first-team spot under Mourinho. He was brought back on the transfer deadline day last summer by Antonio Conte and many described the signing as a panic buy that was bound to fail.
However, Conte worked his magic on the ill-disciplined Brazilian and changed him into a star defender. He had his best season under the Italian and was a mainstay in the mean Chelsea defence that went on to win the title. The new season has not gone well for the Brazilian but and he has been replaced by young Andreas Christensen in the starting line-up. To make things worse for him, he has been reportedly been involved in a rift with the Italian manager and knowing Conte’s history, Luiz is likely to serve a long-term on the sidelines for his impudence.
With the player’s future thrown into great uncertainty, there are rumours linking him with a move to another club. The latest club to be thrown into the mix is Newcastle United. Rafa Benitez’s team is suffering in the league and are in desperate need of new players.
Things have fallen apart since for the Magpies and they are suffering from the tenacity of the English league. They are now 18th in the league and after having collected just one point from their last eighteen possible.
In a league where results after each match week can send a club relegation to top ten, Newcastle will have to continue their fight if they wish to stay afloat this season.
On the transfer front, things have gone very wrong. A lack of a structured approach coupled with callous planning has seen Newcastle fail to register quality, new players in the summer. Rafael Benitez has made no secret of the fact that Newcastle United need new players. After a very impressive season in the Championships that saw Newcastle return to the Premier League, Benitez demanded more signings of Premier League standard to establish the club in England’s premier competition. However, with Newcastle unable to sell their existing crop of players, Newcastle has had to deal with a stagnant squad and that has frustrated Benitez.
In the January transfer window, Benitez has made it clear that he wants reinforcements. With a cringy club owner unwilling to spend much on the club, Benitez will have to spend the little money at his disposal wisely. In such a scenario, a loan move for an established defender would seem to be a very wise move however it is highly unlikely that the Brazilian would join a club struggling in the relegation fight.
