Manchester City are set to sign Libertad’s Paraguayan starlet Jesus Medina, according to Football a Lo Grande, a local news source from Media’s homeland. Danish giants Copenhagen were also interested in the services of the highly talented winger but the Paraguayan is set to join with the Citizens in the January transfer window.
Medina has been super impressive during his stint at the current club, Libertad. He was rewarded with his first cap for Paraguay, after scoring 14 goals in 74 appearances, earlier this season.
Although he hasn’t featured for the national team since his performances in the Paraguayan top division has remained quite impressive so far.
While he may not be a prolific goal-scoring winger, Medina, often becomes a key part of Libertad’s attacking progress towards the final third. He is an agile winger with excellent ball handling qualities as well as decent dribbling skills. What he lacks in productivity, he makes up for it, with his sensational flair and tenacity on the opponent’s half.
Much like Ousmane Dembele of FC Barcelona, Jesus Medina likes to drift into the middle in order to stack up more chances for his team. Furthermore, the 20-year-old is adept at catching the opposition on the break, largely thanks to his sudden burst of pace.
He is also quite good at set-pieces and has scored a few goals from direct free-kicks during his career. His killer left foot is often a worry for the opposing defence.
That being said, however, Jesus Medina clearly doesn’t have the experience nor the competence of playing in Europe at the moment. Even though the 20-year-old has found a lot of success in the Paraguayan footballing division, that may change drastically in the rigours of the Premier League.
Over the years, a lot of South American players have failed to stamp their authority after making the transition to European football. Considering the fact that Jesus Medina has featured in just one international match during his rather short career, it’s definitely hard to predict his fortune in the Premier League.
Fortunately for Manchester City, however, they have an array of sister clubs ranging from America to Australia. Therefore, loaning him out to MLS or the A-League could be ideal, not just for the player but for the club as well.
In fact, Jesus Medina will actually be loaned out to New York City FC anyway since Medina is unable to gain a work permit in England at the moment. Should the deal gets finalized, the Paraguayan will be loaned out to the MLS side for two years.
