Jurgen Klopp’s legacy at Borussia Dortmund is lasting long even after the German’s departure. His heavy metal style of football allowed him to build a team that had aggression and a will to attack relentlessly. He brought in players who suited his style of play and carefully moulded the ones already in the team to form an attacking team which can tenaciously break down rigid defences.
His midfielders were stylish on the ball if not anything else and the results of his tenacious but effective approach at Dortmund can still be seen at the club with the signing of Julian Weigl in 2015 is a classic example of a Jurgen Klopp player.
The young German is highly talented and was named the youngest ever captain of his previous club 1860 Munich at the age of 18. He is good on the ball, has a way past defenders, well-disciplined and knows his game and limitations inside out. However, at the age of 22, what is perhaps most impressive about him is his ability to stick to the tactical game plan word to word and carry out instructions by the letter.
It is now being reported that the German has emerged as a target for high-flying Manchester City. The Citizens have a host of attacking talent but lack of depth in the deeper midfield position. Yaya Toure is reaching the twilight of his career which leaves Fernandinho and injury-prone Ilkay Gundogan as the only players who can play in the holding midfield role. With Pep known to be a manager who likes to rotate his side for matches, he could do with a player of Weigl’s calibre and versatility in the team.
The Citizens have scored over 60 goals this season and having remained unbeaten in the league so far are the favourites to lift the Premier League trophy come May. Even though the team is heavily armed that the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva have to be content with just playing as substitutes, Pep is likely to rotate his squad over the next few weeks again, as he has always been known to be a manager who uses an entire squad to keep players fresh and motivated.
Hence, logically for the German as well, it would make sense to join the Citizens where he would certainly be guaranteed some game time given Pep’s lack of rotation options and could possibly take over the starting midfielder for Guardiola’s team in the coming years.
