Manchester City has agreed to a deal to sign Jesús Medina of Libertad. A recent report in the English press has confirmed that the Citizens have sealed the deal for the Paraguayan attacking midfielder for £3m. The 20-year-old Libertad attacker has already represented his nation Paraguay at the international stage having played for his country at the under-17 and under-20 youth levels. He also made his senior debut earlier this year and has caught the eye with his performances for Libertad this season. It is expected that the Premier League leaders will send him out on loan to Girona or New York City FC as they are all participants of the City Football Group stable.
Some sources are suggesting that Medina was being tracked by a whole host of European clubs but Pep Guardiola was able to strike a deal early and the youngster is now ready to put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Manchester club. They have recently been interested in signing some of the best young talents in world football as Pep Guardiola is a firm believer on giving young players a chance as evidenced by the rapid emergence of Phil Foden in the City first team. The Citizens have also used the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo (20), Oleksandr Zinchenko (21), Brahim Díaz (18) along with Foden (18) in their Carabao Cup quarter-final match versus Leicester City on Tuesday night.
Manchester City were guilty of conceding a last-minute spot-kick but came back strong to win on penalties and qualify for the semi-finals of the competition. In the post-match interview, Pep Guardiola was quoted to have said, “What is important is how we reacted. Whether it was a penalty or not, the referee is there and the TV is there, so the important thing is how we reacted. We could have gone down because it was the last minute and it was tough, especially with a lot of young players.”
His faith in younger players is exactly what the Manchester City hierarchy has been looking forward to! The club may possess some of the greatest talents in world football, yet the Blues of Manchester are also planning for the future. The capture of Jesús Medina is just another small step towards their long-term plan of sustaining success for a prolonged period of time.
Only time will tell whether Medina can break into the City first-team someday. But for now, his immediate goal is likely to be centred around improving his game by gaining a lot of experience at the senior level of a football club.
