Sime Vrsaljko has been enduring a difficult campaign at Atletico Madrid this season. After bowing out of their Champions League group in midweek, the confidence in the Atletico camp has been pretty low and according to recent reports, star defender Sime Vrsaljko might leave the Rojiblancos this January.
The Croatian International has had his difficulties finding proper game time under Diego Simeone this season. The right-back has only played 183 minutes of football in the league this season, featuring in only three matches.
Considering the fact that the World Cup is just around the corner, the Croatian defender will love to get some first team minutes under his belt. Therefore, leaving the Wanda Metropolitano is the most logical decision for Vrsalkjo.
Napoli has been tipped to be the favourites to land on the former Sassouolo defender, with Atletico reportedly slamming a €25 million price tag for his services. The Italian outfit have been one of the most delightful teams to watch in the European football this season and moving to Napoli could be a genuine choice for Sime Vrsaljko.
However, considering the fact that Napoli already have two astonishing fullbacks in their current squad in the shape of Elseid Hysaj and Faouzi Ghoulam, Vrsaljko might still struggle to find the proper game time.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for the Croatian International, of late. Although the Reds haven’t been termed as the favourites to sign the Atleti defender, they do have some very good reasons to sign Vrsaljko this January.
First and foremost, the fullbacks have always been a worry for Liverpool, especially in the last few years. Nathaniel Clyne has remained a long-term absentee due to a back injury. And although players like Joe Gomez and Trent-Alexandre Arnold have been quite impressive in their role of playing as a right-back this season, both of them are highly inexperienced.
Therefore, the addition of Sime Vrsaljko could make loads of sense for the Reds. The Croatian International is a gifted right back who can not only cover the entire flank but also has the right amount of positional sense as well as ferocity, both of which are perfectly suited for the playing style of Jurgen Klopp.
Furthermore, the 25-year-old also has some significant amount of experience of playing at the top level. Therefore, he could prove to be a sensational signing for the Merseyside giants, who can definitely increase the quality of the defensive department for Liverpool.
