Liverpool are lining up a move for Sheffield United midfielder David Brooks when the transfer window opens in January. Some sources in the English press are claiming that the Reds are in a three horse race with fellow Premier League rivals Everton and Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of the midfielder’s signature. The Blades might be set to lose the youngster for £20m when the transfer window commences next month.
However, reports have emerged of late that the Blades boss is reluctant to let him leave the club in January. The 20-year-old Welsh playmaker has recently put pen to paper on a four-year deal to stay at Bramall Lane. The Championship club are in the race to secure a playoff spot this season but might struggle to keep hold of their starlet if a big money offer comes in from one of the top Premier League clubs.
In a recent interview, the Sheffield United boss was quoted to have said, “There’s a lot of off-the-record conversations, whether it be agents, or even clubs themselves asking what we are doing.
“But nothing changes from my point of view. David is not for sale because he is part and parcel of what we are doing going forward.”
The Blades have done well in the second tier of English football after securing promotion from League One. They are currently 7th in the league standings and are in with a chance of securing promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs. However, losing Brooks will a huge blow in their quest of ensuring a playoff spot at the end of the season. The 20-year-old has scored 2 goals and made 4 assists in 21 appearances in all competitions for Sheffield United this season. The youngster arrived in South Yorkshire from Halifax Town in the summer of 2015. Brooks has earned two international caps for the Welsh national team after his impressive performances in this campaign.
Liverpool can currently boast a midfield which is comprised of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Emre Can and Marko Grujic with the latter two touted to depart the club soon. Jurgen Klopp is likely going to look for a new midfielder in the near future with Can set to depart the club with just six months left on his current contract. Brooks might be an ideal addition to the Reds midfield as he has the potential to grow and develop into a top-class Premier League talent.
It remains to be seen whether the Merseyside club are successful in their efforts to fend off competition from their rivals in pursuit of the Welsh player’s signature.
