Leeds United are in negotiations with Manchester United to cancel their defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s season-long loan deal at the club. It is being reported that both clubs could agree to terminate his loan deal at Elland Road after the defender struggled to make an impact this season. Some sources are claiming that the Peacocks are close to agreeing on a deal with the Manchester club for the left-back to return to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens in January. The youngster has been surplus to requirements and has fallen down the pecking order under manager Thomas Christiansen, and now both clubs share the same desire for his loan deal to end as soon as possible.
Manchester United are planning to send him out on loan again if Leeds United decides to part ways with the defender while the Peacocks will look to secure another loan deal in January with a position opening up in Thomas Christiansen’s squad with Borthwick-Jackson’s departure.
The 20-year-old has just made five appearances for Leeds this season with just one start coming in the Championship and four starts in the EFL Cup. The West Yorkshire club has had their issues in the left-back position but Borthwick-Jackson does not feature in Christiansen’s plans going into the new year.
Borthwick-Jackson came to light when he featured in 14 matches under ex-Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal in the 2015/16 season. He is highly versatile and can do a job as a left-back and also in central defence. The 20-year-old went on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers last season but was left frustrated at the Molineux after making just 7 appearances for the Wolves. The defender then went on to make a switch to Leeds United in the summer and is again set to return having failed to impress at West Yorkshire.
It is hard to see him make any kind of impact under Jose Mourinho in the current squad. Ashley Young has been deployed as a left-back in the United starting eleven with Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind all capable of playing in that position. However, Manchester United will likely sanction another loan deal for him as they expect him to grow and develop in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the life of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
The English starlet still has a long way to go with regards to his development and needs to find regular football after failing to shine in his last two loan spells. Only time will tell whether the Red Devils will once again be patient if his next loan move turns out to be a bust.
