Manchester United are one of many clubs that are expected to be busy in the transfer market in January. Jose Mourinho is desperate to improve on particular positions in the squad and the midfield is one area he is keen to improve on. So it does not come as a surprise that the Red Devils are one of many clubs interested in signing German sensation Leon Goretzka.
The Schalke midfielder is growing into one of the best in his role in Europe, at just 22, and is also running out of a contract at the end of the season, making him one of the most wanted men in Europe in January. However, a recurrence of his leg problem has pushed him onto the sidelines, for atleast a couple of months and reports claim that he will not be able to pass a medical in the winter transfer window.
This will come as a huge blow for Mourinho, who will now have to scout for other targets. Here are three players he should look to sign instead:
Javier Pastore (PSG):
The Argentine international is one of the most gifted midfielders in Europe at the moment but has completely fallen out of favour in Paris this season. He has three goals and an assist in six starts this season and has already spoken about quitting the club in the near future. With the World Cup coming up, he might look for regular game time, which he could get at Old Trafford. He is an experienced campaigner and at 28, is at the prime of his career. Surely, he is a player United should look to sign, even in January.
Sergi Roberto (Barcelona):
The versatile Spanish international is also one of the most technically gifted players in the game at the moment. He is predominantly a midfielder, but has been used regularly at right-back in his time at the Camp Nou. His dribbling and confidence on the ball is something Mourinho will love in his side and his discipline will only make him a more attractive option. He has constantly been linked with an exit, with Barcelona looking to sign some big names for their midfield and a move to Manchester United can easily give him a chance to turn into one of the best in Europe.
Leander Dendoncker (RSC Anderlecht):
Belgium youngster Dendoncker is one of the few players who is constantly linked with a move to Manchester United recently. The first choice midfielder for the Belgian outfit, the 22-year old is fast growing as one of the best midfielders in Europe and belongs at the highest stage. Manchester City are also interested in his services but the player has already revealed that the Red of Manchester is something he can picture himself playing in and if United miss out on Goretzka, he is a more than capable alternative.
